Chapter 10 – Ants Appeared!

As expected, the weak bear was sent flying with one kick from me, crashing into a tree.

Not only that, its unnecessarily thick neck snapped off.

Weak!

Well, anyway.

This weak bear is weak, but it tastes pretty good.

And there’s a lot of it.

It’s a great friend to those hungry.

It’s a pain to get rid of the fur, but the elf taught me how.

I’ll keep it for now.

To be honest, it’s not that necessary to keep warm, but it’s good for a rug, and in web novels, you can sell it to make money.

After cutting off the neck, I hang it with a white Fluffy and drain the blood.

The organs are discarded, but it’s a waste.

I’ll eat them if there’s nothing else, but I honestly don’t like them.

My brother eats them happily, though.

If I leave it there it will rot and smell terrible, and it could attract strange magical beasts, so I move it a little further away from the barrier and dig a hole with the white Fluffy and bury it there.

I freeze as much meat as I can.

It’s partly to preserve it, but I feel like I read in a web novel in my past life that it can kill parasites, so I guess it’s just in case.

By the way, it doesn’t seem to be very effective against bacteria, so I make sure to thoroughly cook the meat I’m going to eat.

Unlike the moms who are true Fenrir, I’m just a human, after all.

…or rather, there’s a lot of meat.

I turn on the white Fluffy and use it to turn on the water, I think to myself as I wash my blood-stained hands.

In front of me was a white Fluffy spread out like a board, with a mountain of frozen meat placed on top of it.

Even after removing and cutting up the various parts, there was still quite a lot of meat.

It’s a quantity that I’m sure my brother could finish in no time, but it’s a bit much for me to eat.

Also, thinking about it objectively, if I bring this much meat into the house, it feels like the newly built house will smell fishy.

Well, there’s a barrier, so it’s fine to keep it outside as long as it’s under a roof.

That barrier can’t keep out bacteria, but it’s excellent at keeping out small animals and insects.

So mice, cockroaches, and ants can’t get in.

That’s both a good and bad thing, but…

Once again, I felt something approaching, so I turned my gaze.

There were about five pitch black ants standing there.

They weren’t just ants, they were about the size of an adult human male.

They were what you’d call giant ants.

Some of them were carrying nuts and the corpses of magical beasts.

It seemed they were approaching me, asking if they could have some of my prey as well.

[Go away!]

I barked, and the ants trembled.

Some even dropped the things they were holding in their front paws.

They quickly picked up the things and ran away.

The giant ants are big and sometimes move in large groups of tens of thousands, but they are very timid.

And just like the black ants in my previous life, they also clean up the forest.

That’s why Mama told me not to kill them as much as possible.

However, after that they grimaced and said, “It tastes really bad,” so I think they’re probably bigger.

As for me, unlike the weak bears, they don’t get involved, so I just chase them away.

Hmm?

I noticed some nuts lying where the ants were, so I went over to them.

Ah, an apple.

It’s starting to rot, but…

I picked it up with the white Fluffy and dug around it, and found a seed.

“Ohhh!” I couldn’t help but let out a cry of joy.

Now I can eat the apple.

This is a good start!

Carrying the meat and fur of the weak bear with the white Fluffy, I sprinted back to the house.

For now, I put the meat and fur at the back of the space between the two doors, and stood in the space in front of the house.

I thought about where to plant the apple tree.

At first I thought about planting it right in the middle, but thinking about the future, I decided to plant it on the east side of the space for the time being.

I used the white Fluffy to dig up the ground.

It would be fine to just drop the seed, but perhaps because I was being dragged along by the image of my past life, I softened it to a certain extent.

Then I buried the seed there and gently covered it with soil.

I placed the white Fluffy on top and sent magic power over it.

I put both hands together and lifted it up with all my strength.

“Grow!”

In response to the “powerful words”, a sprout sprouted and grew.

…Powerful words are lines from a movie I saw in my previous life.

I was just feeling it!

The sprout grew from grass, and from a small tree to a tall tree, and fruit started to grow one by one.

…Plant-growing magic is really mysterious.

In my previous life, I remember that fruit needs pollination and things like that, but this time I completely omitted that part.

When I asked my mom, she told me all about magic and plants, but it was so difficult that I fell asleep before I knew it.

So I didn’t understand anything.

…Well, as long as I get results, it’s fine!

I jumped and picked one of the bright red fruit.

After splitting it in half, I licked it just to be sure.

It would be a problem if it was poisonous.

It didn’t seem to be a problem, so I took a bite.

The sweet and sour fruit filled my mouth and I was so happy.

I felt someone’s gaze on me and turned in that direction, and a group of people, probably the ants from before, were looking my way.

…They looked somewhat envious.

Well, well, I guess I got them thanks to those ants.

I picked up about ten with my white Fluffy and gave them to the ants.

They went home very happy.

Morning!

I woke up!

I got out of bed and had breakfast!

I drank soup with some medicinal herbs and other things I had picked before dinner last night.

Well, the white Fluffy would be fine, but since I have a fireplace, I want to buy a pot and simmer things in it.

But human towns are… scary!

I think I’ll put it off.

Now that we’ve gone through the national anthem and national dance, what should we do?

There are three things I need to do right now.

The first is to increase the variety of seeds I can grow with plant-growing magic.

I searched the forest yesterday, but all I could find was one type of medicinal herb and wild strawberries that looked usable.

I want to increase that number even more.

The second is to create a food storehouse.

Actually, I froze the meat of the weak bear yesterday as hard as I could, but by morning it had melted quite a bit.

Well, that’s to be expected, but…

It doesn’t bother me that much in a cave, but I really hate the fishy smell in a newly built wooden house.

Plus, the melted water could cause the house to mold, or even rot.

At the very least, I want to make a separate storehouse and put the food there.

If I make it small and cover it on all sides with ice, will it melt less easily?

Or maybe I should make an underground area…

At worst, I could feed it to slimes, but I’ve heard that if I feed them too much, they’ll split and overflow from the toilet, so I need to be careful.

Also, if there are a lot of slimes, they’ll eat the crops, and I honestly don’t want the ones overflowing from the toilet to wander around.

It’s a pretty difficult problem.

The last thing is expanding the country’s territory.

Currently, my country’s territory is the house and the space in front of it, the size of two tennis courts.

I need to expand it little by little.

Okay, let’s do our best!

…First of all, I went around looking for food seeds, but it didn’t go as I expected.

The only thing I found was wild grapes.

They probably won’t compare to the grapes from my previous life, but I’ll give them a try.

Instead, I found some mushrooms.

As for mushroom cultivation, I have tried it, although it is only one type.

I read about shiitake mushroom cultivation in a Sengoku period web novel, and I used the method of planting fungus on a felled tree, plus, under Mama’s supervision, activated them using plant growth magic, and it worked.

I picked that mushroom and a few others.

Of course, only edible ones.

I had learned that from Mama and the elf sister, so it didn’t turn out to be the usual story of eating a poisonous mushroom and getting a stomach ache.

…Probably.

As I headed home with the things I had gathered in both arms, I saw the same giant ants wandering around outside the barrier again.

Maybe they had come to get an apple again?

Just as I was thinking this, one of the ants offered me an orange fruit.

I mean, orange fruit, it’s an orange!

Huh?

Are you giving it to me?

I look at the ant, and it’s pointing at the apple tree with its front paws and clicking its chin.

I guess it wants something it’s grown, just like the apple?

I take it with my white Fluffy and enter the barrier to bring the mushrooms into the house.

Then, I go next to the apple and, just like last time, dig up a little bit of the soil with my white Fluffy.

I peeled the orange.

The sweet and sour scent stimulates me, and my mouth waters.

I cut it in half and lick one half, which tastes poisonous, but it doesn’t seem to be a problem, so I put a piece in my mouth.

It’s sweeter than I expected, and it’s delicious!

I feel something foreign in my mouth that isn’t fruit, so I spit it out, a little rudely.

A seed fell onto the soil.

I gently cover it with soil using the white Fluffy.

He then places a white Fluffy on it and sends magic power over it.

The orange is a bit of a nuisance, so he takes a white Fluffy out of his other hand and places it there, then bends both hands and lifts it up from the bottom up.

“Grow it!”

It grows rapidly and starts to produce lots of orange fruit.

Wow, that’s nice.

He gives the ants some grown oranges and some apples, and they go home very happy.
