Chapter 17 – Let’s Go to the River!
Morning has come.
It’s a clear day.
As soon as I step out of the house, I perform the national dance along with the national anthem!
…The fairies flying around look at me with strange eyes.
Do fairies not have a national anthem?
Maybe I should make one for them?
Then, the evil fairy approaches me and snorts for some reason.
I’m annoyed, so I take out the white Fluffy bug net in my right hand.
It runs away with great speed.
Damn!
I can’t pay attention to that!
I’ll start growing peppercorns with the seeds I received yesterday.
Actually, this isn’t my first time growing peppercorns.
I was asked by the elf sister to grow them.
First, I use the white Fluffy to till the ground.
Next, I insert the splints.
I think I’ll do about three today.
I plant a seed next to it.
Then I cast a plant growth spell on it.
“Grow!”
Then the sprouts start to grow, turn into vines, and climb the support.
In no time, they bear fruit.
This magic is really amazing.
No matter how you look at it, it’s easy to grow in land with an incompatible climate and season.
It’s meaningless without seeds, but on the other hand, if the seeds and magic match, you can make as much food as you want.
As I was thinking about this, I heard a clicking sound.
I turned my gaze and saw about six large ants outside the barrier.
Did they bring some kind of seed again?
As I approached, one of them held out its front paws.
There were about three seeds. What kind are they today?
As I was about to take them and plant them, one of the fairies stopped me.
It was a winged fairy wearing a maid’s uniform.
Among the fairies taking care of the fairy princess, some are wearing clothes similar to hers.
To put it mildly, she’s cute!
Because she has pink hair, I’m calling her fairy maid Sakura.
I wondered if she’d be offended if I gave her that name without her permission, but she nodded happily.
So cute!
Fairy maid Sakura pointed to two of the seeds I had and made gestures as if to ask for something.
Eh?
Are these two for the flower bed?
I moved to the flower bed area I made yesterday, planted them in the place instructed by fairy maid Sakura, and cast a spell.
One was a yellow rose.
It wasn’t as big as a red rose, but it was a large flower in bloom.
The other was a red tulip.
Fairy maid Sakura was overjoyed, and the other fairy maids gathered round.
Then, they all lined up and flew around in the air, expressing their joy.
Great!
Now, let’s plant one more — eh, over there?
Far away?
Eh? Yes, yes.
When they grew it, they all loved carrots.
…I don’t hate carrots.
I glanced at the fairies.
They flew around the flowers without even looking at me.
I wonder if the fairies hate vegetables?
I decided to eat the carrots for now, and gave the ants some peppers (which were ripe again), oranges, and apples.
The fairies came nearer, so when I offered them the peppers, they slipped away and went for the apples and oranges.
…Yeah, I guess it’s good that they didn’t eat them.
I picked some for everyone, and they happily picked them up and flew off towards the big tree.
It’s amazing that the apples are bigger than my body.
I also finished harvesting the peppercorns and took a short rest when I got home.
Oh, come to think of it, I was thinking of catching some fish in the river.
Maybe I should have some river fish for lunch?
Just in case, I prepared a full outfit and a little extra salt to sprinkle on the fish.
Then I went outside.
I looked towards the flower bed and saw the fairy princesses gathered on it.
When I called out “I’ll be back in a bit,” the fairy princesses turned to me and waved with smiles.
So cute!
I ran with light steps towards the river.
The river wasn’t that far away, and I could see it in about three minutes.
I landed on a big rock by the river with the momentum of my running.
Then I looked around.
Waterside areas are a good place for monsters and animals to gather to drink water.
Among them are some powerful enemies, so caution is necessary.
However, contrary to my fears, I don’t see any serious magical beasts.
At most, I can see five or six weak bears.
Relieved, I climb down from the boulder.
The river is about three meters wide and shallow, about knee-deep.
The water is very clear and you can see it clearly.
Slender shadows flow through it from time to time.
That’s today’s target: river fish.
So, how should I catch them?
The easiest magic is lightning magic.
This magic was what Mama taught me first.
The reason I learned it is because it causes the least damage to the surrounding area.
When using fire, wind, or water attacks, it affects the surrounding area as well as the enemy.
If we’re fighting in enemy territory, there’s no problem, but if it’s our own territory, there’s no point in defending it if we defeat the enemy and turn the surrounding area into a burnt wasteland.
But with lightning magic, Mama told me, we can minimize the impact on non-enemy enemies.
After instantly killing a large bear (not a weak one) with lightning magic, Mama turned to us and said with a gentle smile.
[We are divine beasts – it’s no good just killing enemies and destroying everything around you.
You must become something that protects your territory, whether it’s your territory or whatever.]
I think she said something very good.
…However, it would have been better if Mama’s lightning hadn’t been so powerful that her back hadn’t burst into flames and caused a terrible scene.
Moreover, when Mama noticed this, she panicked and used water magic, which destroyed half of her territory.
Mama…
Now that I think about it, Mama said, “We are divine beasts.”
Fenrir is a divine beast.
I feel like she explained a lot of things to me, but I was basically listening to her clinging to Mama, so I was asleep most of the time.
Was she the fifth or sixth god?
I think Mama said that she descended to this earth with a god, so I’m sure Fenrir is an amazing being.
Well, I’m human, so it doesn’t matter to me.
Anyway, if you use lightning magic, you can catch fish easily.
However, with magic, with the exception of white Fluffy, the power of the magic changes depending on the user’s magical power.
To put it simply, you can’t adjust the power.
Although not as much as Mama, the range of influence is too large.
So I decided to take a different approach.
It’s a common thing in web novels.
When I find a rock about the size of a person’s arm, I lift it up.
In my past life, this wouldn’t budge, but in this life I can lift it up with ease.
Maybe it’s because I’m in another world?
I think it’s also because my mommy gave me a handjob.
I lifted it over my head and moved to the riverbank, where I found a rock sticking out of the river and threw it at it.
Then, the vibration caused the stunned fish to float up!
I’m sure this was a prohibited fishery in Japan in my previous life…
This is another world, so it’ll be okay!
Okay, let’s do it!
–I felt the presence of something approaching.
I turned my gaze to the grass on the other side of the river, and from between the grass an old man’s face was grinning.
It was a manticore.
…
…
…
The rock I was going to use turned red and black, so I had to look for another one.
But it was so annoying.
That old man manticore’s face, both its appearance and movements were disgusting, and the poison in its tail hurts a little when it stings you, and most of all, it tastes awful.
They are monsters with no good qualities.
And yet, just like the weak bear, for some reason they treat me with disdain.
That’s why I make it a rule to exterminate them as soon as I find them.
Hmm?
I turned my eyes again to the approaching presence and saw several pure white furred wolves walking silently towards me.
Oh, a white wolf?
When our eyes met, the white wolf stiffened in shock.
I’m sure humans call them white demon wolves, right?
The leading one looked back and forth between me and the face of the old manticore whose head was split open and lying on the ground.
Oh, maybe it wants to be eaten?
I nodded, and it quickly approached the monster lying on the ground and began gobbling it down.
It’s poisonous, is that okay?
I was worried, but instead of going near the tail, I went munching on the legs and innards.
It’s not really a good thing to hand over prey.
But as Fenrir’s daughter, I somehow find myself being kind to wolf-like creatures.
It can’t be helped.
As I was thinking this, the white wolf suddenly began to howl.
I turned in the direction they were looking, wondering what was going on, and saw a small black creature lying down.
