Chapter 7 – My Destination…

[–Mama!]

When I yelled, Mama had vanished.

Not only was Mama gone, but the rough walls and ceiling of the cave where we were supposed to be were no longer in sight, and all that came into view was a landscape lined with plants.

Huh?

What?

Where?

I don’t recognize this.

The types of plants are different from those around the cave where I used to live.

This must be the southern forest Mama was talking about.

My vision became blurred, and I felt something cold running down my cheek as I yelled.

[Mamaaa! Big Brother! Big Sister!]

Waaaaaa! I cried out in tears, but no one answered me, and I simply melted into the clear blue sky.

I collapsed on the spot with a thud.

A black dragon with a huge jet-black body that spits black flames that don’t go out even when water is poured on it, a poisonous dragon with skin like sewer that damages the eyes and skin just by approaching, a flying dragon that suddenly flies in from the far sky and attacks to eat you…

Kuma-san and Basilisk the Snake King are strong enemies that should never be underestimated.

This world is filled with monsters like these.

How can I survive after being thrown into this terrifying otherworldly place with nothing but my body…

It was only because my mom and brothers were nearby that those monsters were afraid to come near me, but if I were left alone, they would surely come and eat me with glee.

It’s scary~ It’s scary~

As I was lying down and sobbing, I suddenly noticed something above my line of sight.

Hmm?

I sat up and turned around, and saw a wooden house.

It had a rather steeply sloping roof, similar to the lodges I had seen in my previous life.

The floor was built one step higher from the ground.

It looked like a new building, and the surface, likely varnished, was glossy and slightly shiny.

Looking more closely, I saw that Fenrir (probably Mom) was painted on the entrance door at the top of about five flights of stairs.

What?

Did Mom prepare this for me?

A thought occurred to me, and I looked around.

Then I ran over to the thing that caught my eye.

There it was!

It was a small, white stone.

There were many of them, shining slightly, lined up on the ground.

They were barrier stones.

Only those who met “certain conditions” could enter the area surrounded by these.

In other words, as long as you were inside you were safe.

My fear subsided, and I felt a sense of relief.

Come to think of it, Mama is mercilessly strict, but kind!

It was the same when I was training to jump off a cliff before.

When I was on top of the cliff and trembling with fear, Mama said, “Well, you have no choice,” and went down to the bottom of the cliff and said, “Come on, jump towards me!”

Of course, when I jumped, she gently caught me with her body.

That’s the Fenrir Mama was!

In other words, she wants me to use this as my base and rule this land.

Having a safe area makes a huge difference in the sense of security.

Even if a black dragon comes, with this barrier that it can’t enter, at worst I can hole myself up here and wait it out!

Relieved, I had time to look around.

The house was surrounded by a dense forest.

Feeling a bit cautious, I ran towards the house and jumped.

Standing on the top of the roof

There are many trees taller than the house, so it’s hard to see.

Judging from the position of the sun, the front of the house looks to be facing south.

I jump up lightly on the spot.

After flying about twenty meters, I twist my body around and look around 360 degrees.

This place seems to be in the middle of the forest, and is covered by trees for about a kilometer.

After landing on the roof, I fly again to see a little further.

To the north, apart from a spot where the rock surface is exposed in the northeast, it seems to be buried in trees for a considerable distance.

Deep in the east, I can see what appears to be a large river.

To the south, there is a small river, and beyond that is a grassland, and even further ahead I can see a town.

Deep in the west, I can see a bit of what appears to be wilderness.

I land on the roof and close my eyes to feel a presence.

? ? ?

Huh?

I can’t see any sign of large magical beasts.

Maybe they’re hiding cleverly?

No, dragons in particular are so arrogant that they don’t even think of “hiding”.

Maybe there aren’t many powerful magical beasts around here.

My cheeks unconsciously smile.

After all that, she must have been trying to make sure even a tiny girl like me could survive.

Mom’s so kind!

The problem is… the human town, huh.

I jump up again, facing south.

A fortress city — is that what you call it?

It’s surrounded by pretty high-looking walls, and it seems like it would be very difficult to invade with an army.

I don’t know what the military standard of this world is, so it’s hard to say for sure.

Conquer something like that?

By yourself?

That’s an impossible task!

Of course, if it was my mom or brother, it would be possible.

They would probably be so scared and confused that they would throw in the white flag if they even got close.

But a typical girl like me would probably be laughed at.

No, more likely they would look at me with lukewarm eyes and ask if I was a girl with a chuunibyou syndrome.

I landed on the roof and sighed.

Anyway, leaving the difficult stuff aside, I thought I’d take a look inside the house that would serve as our base.

I landed in front of the house.

The size of the house wasn’t very big.

Of course, unlike the housing situation in Japan in my previous life, it was big enough for a family of four to live comfortably.

It was almost too big for me alone.

When I say it wasn’t big, I mean that it was the size of a normal human.

I meant that there was no way the Fenrir moms could fit in there.

There’s no doubt that it was Mama who prepared this place, since she also created the barrier, but I’m sure her older elf sister was involved in the construction and preparation of this place.

Maybe her elf friends are also involved?

I should probably thank her next time.

I sprinted over the five steps and put my hand on the wooden door.

It wasn’t a knob, but a long handle.

There was no lock either.

I’d lived in a relatively large city in my previous life, so it seemed a bit careless, but then I thought to myself, surely there couldn’t be a thief in a forest like this.

In the first place, the cave I was in didn’t even have a door.

Thinking this, I opened the door, and another door appeared in my field of vision.

? ? ?

Huh?

What does that mean?

There was about a meter between the first door I opened and the door at the back, and on the right side there was something like a large wooden shovel.

It’s not a dirt floor, is it?

In such an obviously Western-style house.

A luggage storage area… maybe?

I’m not sure.

On the left side as you enter there are what appear to be windows on the outside and inside.

Maybe for letting in fresh air?

Well, as a middle school student (maybe) who lived in an apartment in my previous life, and living in a cave in this life, it’s understandable that I wouldn’t understand the structure or function of a house.

There is no glass in the windows.

Instead there are wooden double doors.

Maybe they haven’t been invented in this world yet?

I’ll leave that thought for later and go inside.

Is it the smell of a newly built house?

The pleasant smell of wood is really nice.

Feeling good, I grab the knob of the door at the back.

Oh, this one is metal.

And there’s a keyhole.

Huh?

What if I come here and the door is unlocked?

Thinking this, I turned the knob.

It turned out to be an unnecessary worry, and the door opened normally.

The first thing I saw as I entered was darkness.

There were no windows other than the one I’d just seen, so no sunlight could get in.

Well, I have good night vision, so I could kind of tell…

Oh, I found a lamp right at the entrance!

It seems there’s one at the back too.

I looked around while lighting a white Fluffy lamp.

It seemed like the living room was right at the entrance.

It was bare of decoration, giving the impression of being bare.

There was a long wooden table placed there.

It was big enough for about six people to sit together, and the dark brown tabletop was well varnished, so it shone in the lamplight, and when I looked inside, I could faintly see my face.

However, there were only two chairs.

One is probably for me.

Since Mom’s size is too big to fit in here, maybe the other one is for the elf sister?

Maybe she’ll come and check on her.

That would make me feel a little more at ease.

Hmm?

On the table were two long keys, about 20 centimeters long.

I wonder if they’re the front door keys?

They’re both the same shape, so they’re probably spares.

Well, that’s fine for now.

There was a gray stone about 10 centimeters in diameter attached to the ceiling.

A cable-like thing ran from there, up the pillar, and up to a similar gray stone attached to the side of the front door.

Thinking that it might be a light, I pressed it.

…Nothing happened.

What’s this?

…Well, I’ll put that on hold for now.

There was a fireplace in the back.

It was the first time I’d seen a real fireplace, including in my past life.

It was made of dull brown bricks, and was big enough for about two adults to crawl inside.

There was a firewood rack? I think it was a metal stand with firewood piled up on it.

It was designed to hold a pot, and if you put a hot plate on it, you could even grill meat.

That’s nice.

I wanted to try lighting a fire, but maybe I should take a look around first?
